Public Q&A

Which applications can be disrupted when a session changes from one WAN path to another?

Load Balancing and Multi-WAN · 2026-05-31

VPN tunnels, voice calls, video meetings, banking sessions, remote desktop connections and some cloud applications can be interrupted when their public IP changes. Long-lived industrial or telemetry sessions may also need to reconnect. Even if the router fails over quickly, the application may take longer to recover.

Use policy rules to keep sensitive traffic on a preferred path where appropriate, and test the actual application through failover. A site-to-site VPN may need dead-peer detection and automatic renegotiation. Systems should be designed to retry safely rather than assuming the network is permanent. The router configuration and the application recovery behaviour are both part of the solution.
